Are you sick of seeing the spinning pinwheel on your screen? If every new application you open causes your Mac to freeze up, then it may be time to take action. Here are a few ways to speed up your Mac.

Install a Solid State Drive

A solid state drive is not a traditional hard drive, as it stores data in flash memory. This is a great option if you don’t save a lot of files to your computer. Most MacBook Air models come with one. If your MacBook Pro or regular MacBook did not come with a solid state drive, see if one is available for your model. To find your model, go to the Apple menu in the top navigation and select “About This Mac.” You can then search for your version and see if one is available for purchase and installation. You can either take it to a local repair center or Apple Store, or ship it.

Add More Memory

To find out how much memory your computer is currently using, go to Applications > Utilities > Activity Manager. If you find that the memory used is close to your total memory, it may be time to install new memory. Apple’s Support website outlines different options based on your model type, screen size, and year.

Remove Your Old Apps & Documents

Put any old applications or documents you no longer need in the trash bin. Once your files are in the trash bin, you’ll need to select everything and right click. You’ll then select “empty trash” which will remove everything from your hard drive.

Update Your Software

If you haven’t done so in a while, updating your software may lead to improved performance. Go to the Apple menu in the top navigation and select “App Store” to view updates. You’ll be able to view any updates you have available. If you are updating your OS software, back up your work before installing.

Manage What Turns On at Startup

If you have too many items opening when your computer starts, then it may cause your system to boot up really slow. You can find what opens by going to System Preferences > Users & Groups and click on your user name. Next, click on Login Items. Select which items you want to remove, then click the minus button.
